Organic Intelligence brings a necessary shift in perspective from pathology and trauma to the proven methods drawn from the wisdom of mindfulness and the science of self-organization. OI teaches how healing happens from the nervous system up and makes it possible to imagine freedom from suffering. Freedom from suffering becomes freedom for living an authentic, vibrant life in the here-and-now. OI teaches therapists how to observe relevant client behaviors according to a very clear map. This mapping allows therapists to understand the nervous system state, and reveals what kind of intervention is most likely to support natural systemic reorganization. Rather than providing insight per se, Organic Intelligence aims to shepherd observable physio-emotional states according to a protocol which aligns with subtle, but naturally occurring organismic trends toward increased coherence — the rhythm of an integrative biology. Organic Intelligence is a Compassion Enterprise. It is both a teaching and a practice whose aim is to provide access to powerful tools for directly and potently engaging with the needs of all living beings. Tools that establish compassion, reduce stress, and resolve trauma. We promote broad access to these tools through scholarships.
What is Organic Intelligence?
What is Organic Intelligence®?
If we drop underneath the interpretations of immediate experience, we find a very alive world of sensations such as contraction, expansion, freezing, speed, pressure, excitement, numbing, intensity, flatness, nausea, constriction, spaciousness, dullness, warmth, and cold. We can experience these on their own as well as components of more complex conditions such as anxiety, depression, and trauma. In a moment of emotional activation — say with panic, despair, shame, or rage — it can be helpful to temporarily set aside these words and make direct contact with what is unfolding in our immediate experience. For many of us, the habit is to turn from this somatic experiences, exiting into interpretation and other forms of dissociation as we have come to associate connecting with certain self-states as being unsafe, overwhelming, and placing us on the brink of being thrown outside our window of tolerance. This turning from ourselves in times of need is the actual root cause of our continued suffering and struggle. Underneath these triggers are the hidden emotions, events and feelings that belong to these younger vulnerable parts of ourselves, long hidden. These need to be gently and lovingly prized apart or brought together to bring them to a place where we can heal them, discover or rediscover their joys and heal their sorrows through connection, as we integrate them into our older wiser self. In moments of activation, we need ourselves more than ever, to encode new pathways of self-care, replacing the older circuitry of self-aggression and self-abandonment with the slower responses of empathy, attunement, curiosity, and compassion. But we can go slowly, one moment at a time. Just one second is enough.

Rebecca Renfrow is a resilience counselor and group facilitator using Organic Intelligence, Somatic Experiencing and the Creative Community model to help individuals and communities cultivate resource to support and sustain movement toward equity, dignity, vitality and joy. My training in Organic Intelligence helps me see and understand the patterns at play in the bodies and minds of my clients and to choose interventions that support deep lasting change, well beyond the surface level. Rather than focusing on pathology and trauma, OI helps clients connect to and build on innate resilience and inner resource. OI uses image, sensory and somatic tracking, mindfulness, and the free association conversation to help the client integrate previously overwhelming experiences.
