Martin, who at the time was with the Ontario Science Centre, found herself in the hot seat thanks to a highly controversial new exhibit her organization was about to stage, called Body Worlds 2. Fast forward more than a decade and Martin, the president and CEO of Telus Spark, looks pretty relaxed for a woman about to unveil a new iteration of the show, one that exhibits human cadavers that have undergone plastination, a process developed in the late s by German physician Gunther von Hagens. After having staged a similar exhibition in , Martin is well versed in the positives of such a show and careful to point out that all the ethical considerations in using real human bodies have been covered. On Friday morning, Martin and her staff are busy touring various media types through the new Body Worlds Vital sparkscience. Next to the figures — whose skin is peeled off to show muscles, bones, nerves and internal organs — are information plaques describing the complex processes involved in human motion. The plastination process these bodies have undergone involves fluids removed and replaced with resins and polymers. The bodies are then cured with light, heat or certain gases, with the result a rigid, permanent specimen. Those displayed gave their consent to have their bodies used in such a manner; currently, more than Canadians have signed up for the process after having seen the show. Along with more than a dozen full bodies in various states and positions, more than specimens are displayed in cases, everything from an enlarged spleen to a lung ravaged by cigarette smoking. When the first exhibits displaying the plasticized bodies were staged more than 20 years ago, religious and other groups often protested their presence.

Many of you know me as the anatomist who brought the post-mortal body into public consciousness. In recent weeks, politicians and pundits have questioned my latest work: the anatomical preservation of a man and a woman — two consenting, deceased donors — through my science of plastination, in a pose meant to highlight human reproduction. Ironically, despite the criticism of the powerful, our visitors have supported the by now world-renowned "Sex Couple. As a public anatomist, I have strived throughout my career to listen to the people rather than to the arbiters of taste and propriety. I therefore call upon you, the Great British public, to tell me your thoughts on this plastinate.
